Mindfulness and resilience coaching · Ayrshire and online

You're not broken, just overloaded and out of capacity.

Snapping at the people you love. Feeling flat and switched off. Worrying about how your teenager is coping.

Life happens. You will get angry, sad, anxious or overwhelmed. That's part of being human. But you don't have to stay there. I help adults and young people build more room inside, so you can respond more and react less.

Hi, I'm Stephen

Reclaim your capacity now. Sustain it for life.

I'm a trauma-informed Mindfulness and Resilience Coach based in Ayrshire. I see private clients, and I'm also a practitioner with a charity which helps young people.

We start with what's troubling you now. For some people, things begin to shift within a session or two. For others, especially where there's been a lot of hurt, it takes longer, and that's okay. Then we build and sustain your capacity, so you have more room inside for whatever comes next. Difficult feelings still come, but they don't have to take over.

Why I do this

So many people quietly ask, "What's wrong with me?" A better question is, "What happened to me?" They're not broken; their nervous system has been disrupted, so they're out of capacity. I want everyone I work with to know that, and to leave with simple tools they can use for life.

That's what Recover And Flourish Together means to me. Recover, because you can come back from hard days. Flourish, because the aim is more than just coping. Together, because we're not meant to do this alone.

So what is Nervous System Capacity?

Capacity is how much room you have inside to cope with what life throws at you, and to bounce back afterwards. When you have enough room, you can pause and choose how to respond. When you don't, you react before you've had a chance to think.

My approach

Why some days feel harder than others.

Have you ever noticed that some days you can handle almost anything, while on other days a small thing tips you over? That isn't weakness. It's your capacity, and these three ideas explain why it changes.

01

The Barrel

Stress rarely comes from one thing. Poor sleep, work pressure, worry and uncertainty all add a little more water to the barrel. When it's nearly full, small things feel huge. The good news: we can reduce the load, and we can increase capacity.

02

Start with the body

When you're overwhelmed, it's hard to think your way out. Your nervous system likes rhythm and predictability: steady breathing, soothing touch, walking, humming. Sometimes it needs settling. If you feel flat or shut down, it may need gently waking up instead. Either way, when the body is steadier, clearer thinking comes more easily.

03

Respond, rather than react

With more capacity you can be calm, alert and in control. I use a simple guide called REST:

  • Regulate
  • Evaluate
  • Set an intention
  • Take wise action

The event may not change. Your response can.

Much of my work is psychosensory. That means working through the senses, with gentle touch, tapping, rhythm and breath, to help the nervous system settle. When the body feels safer, there's more room to think, feel and choose. Here's one you can try now.

Try this now · 1 minute

The Soothing Hand

  1. Place one hand gently on your chest, or wherever feels comfortable. Keeping your eyes open is fine.
  2. Notice the warmth and the light pressure of your hand.
  3. Breathe in slowly for a count of 5, and out for a count of 5. (For younger people, 4 and 4 often feels easier.)
  4. Do this for five or six breaths. There's no right or wrong way.
  5. Try this with either hand. You may find one hand is more soothing than the other.

Then notice one small thing that has gone OK today, even something tiny. Stay with it for a breath or two, and notice how it feels in your body: perhaps a little warmth, lightness or softening. Good moments matter too, and they need a little time to sink in. If nothing comes, that's OK. Just stay with your breath.

If this doesn't feel right for you, stop and just notice your feet on the floor instead.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is flexibility.

How I can help

Working together.

Creating the conditions for change

One-to-one sessions for adults and young people, in person in Ayrshire or online, whichever suits you best. Together we'll look at what your nervous system has been carrying. Then we'll build more room inside, and a feeling of safety, step by step.

Feeling safe with another person can help the nervous system settle, which is why the relationship matters as much as any technique.

Over time, this can help you feel more in charge of your life again, with more choice in how you respond, and more confidence where stress, anxiety or hard experiences have worn it down.

Parents: if you're getting in touch about your child or teenager, just say so. We can talk through how sessions would work for them, and how you can be involved.

How it works

01

A free 20-minute call

A chance to ask questions and see whether working together feels right, with no obligation.

02

Sessions at your pace

In person in Ayrshire or online. We start with what your nervous system has been carrying, and build from there.

03

Sustain it

Simple practices you can use at home, so you keep more room to respond and hard days don't have to take over.

Some people like to talk first. Others have a quick question, or would rather go straight to a first session. Whatever suits you.

Kind words

What people say.

"At the beginning, my daughter was so tearful and anxious. I didn't think anything would help. Thanks to your patience, she has useful tools she can use to help regulate when she feels anxious. Thank you for helping her get her confidence back."

Parent of a teenager

"Stephen supported and guided me with his breathing and tapping techniques, which I used up to and on the day of my driving test. They're an excellent way to control my nerves in challenging situations, and an excellent life skill."

Lauchlan B

"My son returned to school and was laughing and joking about his day. Thank you for helping my boy feel happy instead of always being afraid."

Parent of a teenager

"Stephen helped me massively with how to deal with a fear of mine, and how to help myself with the stress of running a business. Would highly recommend."

Grant B

"Thank you so much for all your time, help and strategies. You have made such a difference to both me and my child, and we can't thank you enough."

Parent of a child

"I met up with Stephen to speak about a fear from the past that was holding me back. I feel relieved that I don't have that tearful feeling when I think about it now. Stephen, I can't thank you enough."
